Today I wanna talk about why the 1996 draft class is the Best Draft Class in NBA history. Let’s get that Kobe LeBron MJ debate started in the comment section. It’s been a while since I’ve done one of these so let me know if you wanna see more. I saw Andy Hoops do a worst draft class video and got inspired so let’s get into it.
Yeah I said it, the 1996 draft class with Kobe Bryant, Allen Iverson, and Steve Nash is better than the 2003 draft class with LeBron, Melo, and Wade AND is better than the 1984 draft with Michael Jordan, Hakeem, and Charles Barkley. While there are so many debates on who’s the better player between Kobe, LeBron, and Jordan, we are talking about the draft class as a whole. But I still wanna see who you think is the GOAT so let me know in the comment section.
So about the draft class as a whole, the 1996 draft class had a combined 68 All-Star appearances and 9 titles. The 1984 draft class had 53 all-star appearances and 9 titles while the 2003 draft class has 52 all star appearances and 9 titles.
The 2003 draft class is automatically eliminated because of the 42nd pick ZaZa Pacheapshot. Alright jokes aside, the 1996 draft class edges out the other classes because of depth. Not only did the class have Kobe, AI, and Steve Nash, but it also had Ray Allen, Stephen Marbury, Antoine Walker, Shareef Abdur-Rahim, Marcus Camby, Peja Stojakavic, Big Z, and Jermaine O’Neal who were all All Stars and Ben Wallace who was undrafted. Ray Allen and Peja are some of the best shooters of all time and having these many All Stars in one draft is crazy, but these cases got a bunch of designs of talented players so check out athletics cases for some extra layers of protection.
The 1984 draft class had MJ, Hakeem, Barkley, and John Stockton, and Michael Turpin. Yeah Michael Turpin, a bust. They only had 3 other All-Stars that includes a defensive player of the year Alvin Robertson, which gives them 7 in total, but that’s small compared to 12 All Stars in the 1996 draft class. Just the accumulation of talent in the 1996 draft class makes them better. It’s important to assess the amount of talent of each player which is pretty hard to do since everyone has their own opinions and metrics for comparing. I’ll make the statement that the 1984 draft class might have have more talent per All-Star because the class had 39 ALL-NBA seasons compared to only 30 for the 1996 class. But, the 1996 draft class had more talent per player in the draft, simply because there is more depth.
The 2003 draft class is still adding to the resume with LeBron leading the charge. They have 9 All-Stars that include LeBron, Wade, Bosh, Melo, Mo Williams, David West, Chris Kaman, Kyle Korver, and Josh Howard, but that’s still not enough to beat the 1996 draft and they got Darko Milicic, a bust, but he has a ring, one more than Melo. All the other draft classes in comparison don’t measure up to these 3.
The 1996 draft class just has so much talent. But just think, MJ, Kobe, and LeBron were all part of some legendary draft classes and came into the league with so much talent around them. But at the end of the day, the 1996 draft class is the best draft class in NBA history. But what do you think? Do you agree? Who’s the GOAT? Lemme know in the comments down below.
Drop a like if you like this video. Every like is a wish for a legendary draft class for next year.
